Acrostics
Ms. 7 was telling me about her poetry studies. "Give me a word," she said. "Because," I said. "Okay, now give me one line per letter." I did, between filling lunch boxes. I wasn't satisfied.
"You do one while I shower," I told her. "Give me a word," she said. "Winter," I returned, dashing off to the bathroom.
She read me her result in a shout from the kitchen. I didn't complain about the loud voice. I was very satisfied.
Mine
Because the crow called
even though the sun was not risen
called hauntingly
across the sky
unabashed
selflessly
especially then I thought of you.
Hers
Winter when the snow falls
in the snow we play
not the warmest month
turtles are not out yet
enter the still cold
race to spring time!
"She wrote that?" asks Steve. Yes, and I wouldn't have believed it unless I'd seen it with my own eyes, but this (proud, can we say very proud?) Mom definitely saw.

What a great exercise!
She obviously inherited that "writing" gene from you!
You can't see my jaw dropped and mouth gaping open in astonishment. That is amazing poetry and language for a person of 7 years. Does she give lessons?
She wrote that? Wow.
"turtles are not out yet"? Now that, my friend, is a gorgeous line. Big doff o' the hat to young Ms. 7.
turtles are not out yet-- That is so sweet.
verra, verra nice. Blessings abound
So beautiful.
So brilliant.
So not surprising...considering from whence she came.
(And this: one of my favorite childhood activities, that acrostic thing.)
I'm proud of YOU!
Rearing her the RIGHT way (poetically!)
I wish I had started writing again earlier - maybe I could have rubbed off more on my two...
How very cool! I wonder if my son would play with me? ...........
I loved the poetry game. Sadly, I have no talent for it. However I have several friends who write beautifully--I live vicariously through the words of others.
I AM DUMB-FOUNDED. How wonderful. This child is clearly an old spirit in a child's body
Bravo to you for helping her to see through your eyes the wonder of language.
awesome!! That's super!
