  • ........TV

Exercising my body is simultaneously exercising my already quite
healthy (although previously ungrounded) disdain for all things
television.  With five of them staring me in the face while I gasp
and pound away, every lunch hour brings on another helping of CNN,
reality tv, a soap or two, Fox "News," or making over your kitchen,
den, spouse or yourself.  And frankly none of it seems anything
    but off-kilter and badly staged.

So the other day I saw the usual antic people interviewing some eager
young female contestants to be the wife of an aged billionare.  As
a denouement, they were supposed to deliver the eulogy they'd give at
his funeral before cashing in on his wealth, and then longingly lick the urn.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Over the top, but hardly more over the top than
anything on any of the competing four screens..........except.
Except every now and then a great big "FAKE!!" would flash up.  Apparently the kicker here is that the whole scenario is
made up, and these chicks are being duped.  No real
    billionare.  'Cause it's (self-proclaimed):  BSTV!

    Er?  Oxymoron, anyone?

  • Boy, can I identify!  I gave up tv (again!) right after 9/11, when I realized all teh  "sonsors" were making billions while advertising right after the millionth re-showing of the poor infortunates jumping to their deaths off the World Trade Center before it totally collapsed.

I haven't gone back since, except to see the ones at the gym when I am forced to run there instead of outdoors.  I  have so far seen nothing of worth and a lot of horriblness that is silently creepong into our lives with each moment a stupid program like that Billionaire one is on in another home.

    what trash!

  • The content of some of these tv shows has gone beyond my wildest imaginings about how worthless and bizarre the genre might decend.  I can't fathom that real people, in control of real wealth and power actually produce this stuff. Their analysis, apparently, of the viewing market supports the production of these products.  How true is this?  Am I really surrounded by a society that yearns for this entertainment?  What does it say about our perspective of the relative importance of things in life if some of our most heavily watched tv shows are about "extreme makeovers".

    Go Bo!

  • So does that mean you're skipping the American Idol Finalee tonight?

just kidding... I call most of that supposed real TV-- trash TV... I mean c'mon! They're filming these people-- (anthropologist in the village syndrome, anyone?), and then they edit the shit so situations can appear even more sensational than they were!

  • Considering I receive these "faux" programs with roughly 6 month delays (making them even more passe...if that's possible) there is a part of my brain which freezes and skims it like the proverbial car crash. These programs briefly suck me in, while simultaneously causing me to shake my head at how "foreign" it all seems...from the vernacular used to the very concepts and content.

I also like to watch Scandinavian films with Japanese subtitles.
Ask me how my comprehension level (as opposed to with the reality t.v.) compares.

  • Yeah... I started noticing BSTV on the nightly news when ABC CBS and NBC ran the same stories at the same time in the same sequence.

My opinion of network TV is lower than whaleshit. I don't favor may cable channels, either.

  • Maybe you could put some videos of great movies on while you exercised?

  • Hoo, yeah.  Just plain ol' moronic, too.  ((shakes head))

  • We signed up for a free two month trial of digital tv from our cable provider. What a waste of time. The only features we'd actually miss are the "on-demand" movies. And perhaps the Documentary Channel. And that's another thing... the only "real" reality tv is documentaries. The rest is entertainment. Colour me a snob, but that's how I feel...

  • I agree with Mr. grendel!
    completely.

  • Hi-came across your site.  Yep, 40something, it's a gas.

  • bstv..................lol

  • lick the urn?

Thanks, thinking about returning to it at times. Someone wanted to buy my name, can you believe that? Meanwhile I've been living as txdot.

You might have to take your workout outside!

  • I haven't been to your site in so long..  I realized today when I posted, it has been about a month since I last had.. Realized I really miss it!!

I think most tv shows really stink. I've gotten to the point where I very rarely watch any at all. Now, I'm more into the nerdy (ha ha) shows about home makeovers, and do it yourself, and cooking.. But, mostly on CMT. :)

    Blessings, ~Helena

  • groaaaan..... The T.V. experience is like eating corned beef hash. Cold. Mixed with cigarette butts. The difference in health benefits is negligable. Take care.

  • Here's something I found interesting:

    Strange but interesting:

Check out this car advertisement from Ireland. When they finished filming the ad the people who made it noticed something moving along the side of the car, like a ghostly white mist, and an eerie sound that you can barely hear. The ad was never put to air due to the unexplained ghostly phenomenon. Watch it closely and about halfway look and you will see the white mist crossing in front of the car then following it along the road, spooky. • I don't even pretend to make sense of reality TV.  It's all for the sake of selling us crap we don't need.  I watch more TV than I'd like to right now because I'm unemployed, working towards broke, and bored.  Blegh.

  • I don't hate tv like you do, but I don't dirty my mind or time with those so-called reality shows.  Eew.

  • As a TV junkie from way back, I'd take umbrage, except you're absolutely right -- when it comes to CURRENT tv.  Before going to work today, I treated myself to two NYPD Blue reruns on Court TV.  The episodes hold up, as do the Mary Tyler Moore reruns, etc.  But the reality shit that passes for entertainment these days?  Ugh.
